I think the ending was an attempt to make the audience question reality, but you only question the reality within the story. Us audience do not question our reality because reality only becomes blurred when u play the game, and we do not have any VR like in the movie. This has been done better by other movies.
If you like these movies about Virtual Reality games, I suggest you check out 13th Floor. It is not action packed like Virtulosity or eXistenZ or The Matrix, which it is wrongly compared to often, but it is a great movie.
